Diversity & inclusion are important to business growth.

Writing should be respectful of all people and cultures.

Unfortunately, we are living in a time of great societal unrest where some are using their words to deliberately insult and demean other people. From servers scribbling racist or body shaming notes on receipts to racial slurs scrawled across businesses and private homes, disrespectful writing is revealing the dark soul of humanity with rapid intensity. Every day, we are bombarded with stories of adults and children alike being hurt and offended by somebody's words. The pushback against these expressions of bigotry is called "cancel culture" where constituents are demanding an end to uncivil language and behavior.

The online course, "Diversity in Workplace Writing," illustrates how to identify and avoid language bias by analyzing real case studies of agencies that have fallen victim to bias. Every lesson shows alternate ways to write objectively. Although we cannot control people's (mis)interpretations of our writing, we can ensure that it meets current standards of decency when referencing race, sex, gender, orientation, age, medical condition or disability.

As a result of taking this class, you will:

  • Understand the definition of unconscious or implicit bias.
    • Understand the definition of language bias.
      • Understand workplace bias.
      • Learn to identify & correct biased writing.
      • Get specific tips on correcting biased writing.
      • Receive specific strategies for writing objectively.
